For any person working in a remote location where immediate evacuation from height may be needed. Includes extensive use of evacuation equipment.
In the Evacuation by Descent course, Participants will learn the suitability of various anchor types and the correct positioning of anchors for ease of descent and evacuation from height.
Evacuation by Descent includes information on hazards for descent lines (especially sharp edges and slack rope), the need to ensure a free descent path, methods of controlling the speed of descent and how to secure descenders to halt during the descent.
On completion of the course, participants will gain practical experience of a variety of descent devices.
Course elements covered include:
- Characteristics of personal descent systems
- Selection of anchorages.
- Choosing a safe rescue path (projections, wind etc).
- Pre-use checks on equipment used
- Requirements of a secondary safety system for training
Practical skills covered in this course include:
- Fitting a harness
- Self evacuation
Safety footwear required for all practical sessions.
The syllabus includes important requirements set out in the recent HSE Operational Circular on the use of evacuation equipment.
